Nylon 6 nanocomposites are novel types of composite materials comprised of very thin, ¡¥nanometer scale¡¦ dispersions of smectitic silicate (clay) platelets. The PA6 nanocomposites are prepared via a polymerization technique using suitable organo-modified montomorillonite clays. The layers of the clay are fully exfoliated. The high surface area of such platelet dispersions leads to a good degree of reinforcement at low clay levels, resulting in improved specific modulus, strength and heat distortion temperature. In addition, the well-dispersed platelets contribute to improved permeation barriers to gas, moisture and solvents.
